At the VAS State Convention the 2011 Junior Show Ambassador was awarded from 10 outstanding regional finalists. Hannah Gillard won the Award representing the Central & Upper Goulburn Group. Hannah is the fourth generation to be involved with the Mansfield Agricultural and Pastoral Society and is the assistant coordinator of the Mansfield horse section.
All ten finalists are deeply involved with their local show, from running horse sections to sourcing sponsorship to sorting out ribbons. It was inspiring to hear about their passion, commitment and innovation to not only to their hometown show, but to the wider community.

Representing the Wimmera region, 26 year old Rose Harris of the Donald P&A Society, took out the top award in the 2011 Rural Ambassador Award Victorian Finals at a Presentation Dinner held in the Port Phillip Room at Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday, 24 September 2011 during the Royal Melbourne Show.

Ecstatic about achieving the accolade, Ms Harris who currently works as a journalist, was named the winner of the 2011 Rural Ambassador Award by the Honourable Dr Bill Sykes MP. The Rural Ambassador Award is presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in conjunction with Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd and is an integral part of the Royal Melbourne Show.

“It is such an honour to be recognised by the RASV, given that agriculture in Australia is an area that calls for more attention and as the recipient of the Rural Ambassador Award, I will strengthen the role of young people in promoting and developing such an important part of Australian life, despite your level of involvement in agriculture, it is the backbone of every country community,” Ms Harris said.

Taking home $8,000 to further her career, Ms Harris says she plans to use the funds to invest in her career with a view to shaping the future of agriculture in Australia around raising the awareness of the “good stories” coming out of the rural areas to strengthen resilience in small communities as well as issues such as the need for affordable childcare in these communities.

Runner up of the 2011 Victorian Rural Ambassador Awards is 25 year old Kerri Ross of Ballarat A&P Society in the Midlands region.
The National Finals will be held during the Royal Darwin Show in July 2012 and in 2013 the Awards go international with the National Finals set to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand.
