Representing the Wimmera region, 26 year old Rose Harris of the Donald P&A Society, took out the top award in the 2011 Rural Ambassador Award Victorian Finals at a Presentation Dinner held in the Port Phillip Room at Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday, 24 September 2011 during the Royal Melbourne Show.
Ecstatic about achieving the accolade, Ms Harris who currently works as a journalist, was named the winner of the 2011 Rural Ambassador Award by the Honourable Dr Bill Sykes MP. The Rural Ambassador Award is presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in conjunction with Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd and is an integral part of the Royal Melbourne Show.
“It is such an honour to be recognised by the RASV, given that agriculture in Australia is an area that calls for more attention and as the recipient of the Rural Ambassador Award, I will strengthen the role of young people in promoting and developing such an important part of Australian life, despite your level of involvement in agriculture, it is the backbone of every country community,” Ms Harris said.
Taking home $8,000 to further her career, Ms Harris says she plans to use the funds to invest in her career with a view to shaping the future of agriculture in Australia around raising the awareness of the “good stories” coming out of the rural areas to strengthen resilience in small communities as well as issues such as the need for affordable childcare in these communities.
