Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd Competitions
172 years ago Victorian squatters decided to hold Victoria’s first country show. The Agricultural and Pastoral Society of Australia Felix formed in 1840 and held its first and last show at the Melbourne Cattle Market, at the corner of Elizabeth and Victoria Streets in 1842. Prizes were awarded for horses, cattle, wheat, watermelons and vegetables.
Nearly two centuries later Victorians are still battling it out for the richest fruit cake, the biggest pumpkin and the best bull.
VAS, together with local shows/field days, conducts 22 state wide competitions.
