The Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd. Saddle Horse Championship was first run in 1996. It was conceived the summer before over a couple cool drinks. A few VAS members were musing over ways to up attendances at horse sections in country shows.
‘Why don’t we run our own best of event’ said one.
‘We could get them to qualify at three VAS country shows’ said the other.
‘Sold’ said the third.
And VAS Ltd Saddle Horse was born (hold the emails, telephone calls and letters, I know this isn’t exactly what happened, but it’s a dramatic interpretation!)
In 2012 the event has expanded to a three day event, running from Friday January 6th to Sunday January 8th. 2012 sees the introduction of led classes and a new event, The VAS Equine Excellence Award.
The Equine Excellence Award is a new open class and judging is points based and will centre around the combination of horse and rider and included a ridden and led section. Points will be awarded for overall appearance, manners and paces, confirmation and soundness and a led workout. The VAS Equine Excellence Award is a challenging event that will reward standards of excellence in both the rider and the horse. To qualify for entry in the VAS Equine Excellence Award the competitor must have competed in at least three VAS Limited shows.
